Inhabit that memory as fully as possible: the physical sensations, the quality of attention, the clarity of thought. At the peak of that recalled state, apply a unique physical anchor—pressing two fingers together, for instance, or placing a hand flat on the desk. Repeat this sequence three to five times over several sessions to establish the association.
Once conditioned, firing the anchor before the next meeting or work session provides a rapid pathway back to the focused state.
Step Four: Strategic Priming (60–90 seconds)
Before returning to the calendar, spend sixty to ninety seconds orienting toward the highest-priority strategic question currently on your plate—not to solve it, but to prime the brain to process it in the background. State the question clearly, either in writing or aloud. The reticular activating system, which governs what information the brain flags as relevant, responds to explicitly stated intentions. Priming it in this way increases the likelihood of useful insight emerging even during subsequent meetings.
Structural Changes That Protect Cognitive Capital
The protocol above addresses the immediate problem. But sustainable strategic capacity also requires structural adjustment.
